Privacy Policy
Effective October 28, 2026
Book on Tape is designed to let families record and listen to narrations of books they own. The app does not include advertising, analytics, or tracking.
Information stored by the app
An adult can create a private library containing book details and ISBNs; cover images; audio recordings and page-turn markers; playback history and preferences; and sharing permissions selected by the adult.
The app stores this content on the device. When iCloud is available, it can also store the content in the user’s private iCloud account so the library can sync across devices. Book on Tape’s developer does not operate a separate account system or server and cannot view content stored in a user’s private iCloud database.
Sharing
An adult may choose to share a library with specific people through Apple’s iCloud sharing service. Invited participants may be allowed to listen only or to edit the shared library. Apple processes and stores shared content under its own terms and privacy policy.
Book on Tape does not sell personal information or share it for advertising, marketing, or tracking.
Camera, microphone, Photos, and biometrics
- Microphone: records narration.
- Camera: scans an ISBN barcode or photographs a book cover.
- Photos: lets an adult select a book-cover image.
- Face ID or Touch ID: protects actions that can change the library or its settings.
Biometric matching is performed by the device. Book on Tape does not receive or store biometric information.
Open Library
When an adult chooses to look up a book by ISBN, Book on Tape sends that ISBN to Open Library, a service of the Internet Archive, and receives available book metadata and cover art. Book on Tape does not send a recording, name, email address, advertising identifier, or precise location to Open Library. The request is subject to the Internet Archive’s privacy practices.
Lookup is optional. An adult can enter book details and provide a cover manually.
Children
Book on Tape is intended to be set up by a parent or guardian and then used by children for listening. Adding or changing books, recording narration, managing sharing, and changing settings require the device owner’s biometric approval.
Book on Tape does not ask children for names, email addresses, birth dates, locations, or contact information. It contains no advertising, social features, public profiles, third-party analytics, or behavioral tracking.
Retention and deletion
Removing a book places it in Recently Deleted for 30 days. During that period, an adult can restore it. After 30 days, the app deletes its local cover and narration files and retains only limited deletion information needed to keep the removed book from reappearing on another synced device.
Removing the app deletes its local data but may not delete data stored in iCloud. Users can manage Book on Tape’s iCloud storage through their Apple account and device settings. For synced libraries, related media may remain in iCloud until it is removed through those settings.
Security
Book on Tape relies on Apple’s device security, app sandbox, biometric authentication, and iCloud security. No system can guarantee absolute security.
Changes
This policy may change as Book on Tape develops. The effective date will be updated when the policy changes materially.
